About Us
The school is located in Wawona, in the southern district of Yosemite National Park. There has been an active school in Wawona since the 1890’s and, while originally founded to provide educational services to the children of National Park and concessionaire employees, in the past few years the school has begun attracting students from surrounding mountain communities.
The foundation of our academic program includes a multi-age classroom where students work in groups or individually through a Montessori approach to project-based learning activities and California standards aligned instruction. The multi-age experience truly creates a sense of mutual affection and respect between students and staff. Children flourish in the caring environment that is very “family-like”. Our students are encouraged to become independent thinkers who are in charge of their own learning as they take risks, imagine, investigate, question, and create. The role of the superbly qualified staff is to assist children in finding their own unique gifts by challenging, supporting, and encouraging them.
The unique location of the school lends itself to environmental studies where students are connected with real-life, hands-on learning experiences throughout Yosemite National Park. The school also offers its students experiences in art, drama, music, cooking, and community enrichment. Students in grades 4th-6th have the opportunity to participate in NatureBridge programs and overnight trips.
The school office is open during school hours (Monday - Thursday 8am -3pm)
Any questions can be directed to us via email at sboydstun@yosemitewawonacharter.org or by calling (209) 375-6383
We are a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization
